New City School's Chess Club is a great way to be introduced to chess for players who may or may not know the game. This team typically includes 1st and 2nd Graders, but is open to students up to 6th Grade (Kindergarteners are also allowed if a parent is willing to help the team during weekly practices). We start with the basics on how to setup a chess board, play the game, and move the pieces. Each week the students will have time to try out their chess skills with other players on the team, as coaches go around and give them guidance on the game. 

The team meets weekly throughout the Fall semester; students interested in signing up for the state team continue to meet through the Spring.
