Visit from Author Sharon M. Draper

Award-winning author Sharon M. Draper visited New City School on October 23rd to give a talk to our 4th, 5th, and 6th grades about her life as an author, her stories, and the process of writing and editing a book. Audience participants helped the author explain how she developed plots and characters to fit her intended audience, and a question-and-answer session at the end allowed students to get a deeper understanding of what goes into writing a novel. The author responded to a wide variety of student questions, from how she works through a more difficult moment (take an ice cream break) to why she chose to write about characters with disabilities (“Because everyone deserves a story.”).

Sharon Draper reads an excerpt from her novel, Blended.

A five-time winner of the Coretta Scott King Literary Award, former National Teacher of the Year, and New York Times bestselling author, Sharon Draper is the author of many wonderful books, including Out of My Mind. You can learn more about her work on her website.

Many thanks to Sharon Draper for visiting our school, and to Webster Groves’ Independent bookstore, The Novel Neighbor, for facilitating this wonderful opportunity for our students!
