Striving for Equity, Inclusion, and Community Conference at New City School

This past Saturday, April 13th, New City School hosted our inaugural “Striving for Equity, Inclusion, and Community Conference” for adults and students from eleven St. Louis independent schools, including: Community School, Forsyth School, John Burroughs School, Logos School, MICDS, New City School, The College School, The Principia, St. Joseph's Academy, Whitfield School, and Wilson School.

This conference did not follow a typical conference/workshop model, but rather brought school pods together, including two people from each of the following constituent groups: Students, Parents, Alumni, Faculty and Staff, Administrators, Diversity and Inclusion Practitioners, and Trustees.

Throughout the day, folks heard from Dr. Joshua Bennett, our keynote speaker, met in their constituent groups, had an opportunity to listen to students share their thoughts, and then met as their school pod to put together an action plan. The purpose of the day was to come together to share in a conversation, learn from each other's challenges and successes, and identify effective practices that can be taken back and shared with each school community to inspire change. Dr. Joshua Bennett framed our day together so nicely with his message and spoken word performance about the importance of creating a space where everyone can bring their whole, beautiful selves through our doors every day, and that we see the value, worth, and beauty in everyone.

The day was a HUGE success with many thanks to all of our volunteers and NCS pod participants!
