NCS Faculty at the ISACS annual meeting

Chris Wallach (First Grade) and Stephanie Teachout Allen (5th Grade) recently represented New City School at the annual meeting of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS). Chris and Stephanie traveled to Detroit to lead conversations related to our practices here at New City. Chris spoke about mindfulness practice in the classroom and school community, and how it can be used by educators, parents, and students, not only as a stress reduction technique, but also the practice’s positive effects on executive function and emotional regulation. Stephanie discussed ways to engage elementary age students in conversations about race and privilege, as well as how to be an upstander. This presentation was based on her work with our 5th graders, specifically on the Ferguson and Delmar Divide units, as well as her work with our 5th and 6th Grade Food for Thought Diversity Club. This is a great example of a way in which NCS teachers share our work with the greater independent school community in our region. Great job, Chris and Stephanie!
