Meet the Staff: Chris Wallach, First Grade Teacher

What words best describe you?
Patient.

How long have you been at New City School and what did you do before coming here?
19 years; I have taught for 35-½ years. Before New City, I taught in public schools in rural Missouri and in the St. Louis Metro area.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I practice mindfulness everyday. I love to be outside, and I actually live on a farm (that is no longer farmed) in Jefferson County. I am looking forward to the day when I can have chickens again and would love to add other animals to the mix - goats, perhaps? I have two wonderful daughters who attended New City and will soon both be in college.

What do you like to do when you're not at New City?
I have so many things I love to do: garden outside; or in my basement, dye recycled clothing – MyDye by Chris; write poetry; meditate on my front porch; be a mom; attend writing classes; read; take walks; and, one night a week, I play with babies and toddlers.

What did six-year-old Chris want to be when she grew up?
An adventurer. I spent a lot of my six-year-old time building forts in the woods behind my house.

What is your ideal vacation?
Someplace quiet where I can spend time outside without commotion; for example, an uncrowded beach or a woodland retreat – an introvert’s paradise.

What is something that most people don't know about you?
I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.
