Head of School Search: Frequently Asked Questions

How was the search committee selected?
In 2013, the New City Board of Trustees adopted a succession plan to help prepare for a change in leadership. As outlined in the plan, the Board of Trustees President, Tom Nelson, worked with the Search Committee Chair, Mary Ann Wymore, and the Board’s executive committee to select individuals who represent the board, current parents, faculty and staff, and alumni. The committee was named in July 2014 and has been meeting regularly since then.
What is the role of the search committee?
The search committee directs the search process from start to finish, and keeps the New City community informed during the process. As outlined in the succession plan, the search committee selects a consultant to help with the process, advises the Board on appointing an interim head of school, establishes a budget and timeline for the process, works with the consultant to market the position, reviews submitted resumes, develops ranking criteria, completes a background check on final candidate(s) and makes a recommendation on the new head of school to the Board of Trustees.
Who are the consultants who are helping with this process? What is their experience?
After interviewing several national renowned search firms, the search committee retained Carney, Sandoe & Associates to help us in the search process. Carney Sandoe is a leader in recruiting directors at independent schools around the country. We are working specifically with Jane Phillips and Marguerite Lloyd, both of whom have extensive experience in independent school education and conducting searches for schools. They are highly qualified and have spent time at New City to understand our culture and community. We are excited to be working with them.
What is the overall timeline for the search?
Our original timeline (noted below) called for the search committee to begin interviewing in summer 2015. We have been thrilled with the response and interest in the position to date and have decided to begin interviewing in Spring 2015 to ensure we maintain interest in the position from highly qualified candidates. This may result in moving up our timeline and announcement of a new head, but will not change the start date for the new head of school (July 1, 2016).

When is Tom Hoerr’s last day?
Tom’s last day as head of school at New City is June 30, 2015.
When will the new head of school begin?
The new head of school will begin July 1, 2016.
What will happen during the interim year?
In November, the Board of Trustees appointed Patricia Nuernberger to serve as the Interim Head of School for the 2015-16 school year. Pat has a profound commitment to New City’s students and to its mission; she has been employed at New City for 18 years, including prior terms as Interim Head of School during Tom’s sabbaticals. Pat holds a B.S. in Education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, a M.Ed. in Reading and Learning Disabilities from the University of Missouri-St. Louis; and a Ph.D. from St. Louis University. The Board is excited about Pat’s leadership next year as we prepare for a new permanent head of school.
Will I be able to meet the candidates?
Yes! The finalist candidates will visit New City over 1-2 days and will meet with faculty, parents, other members of the community and the board. We will notify the New City community of the dates via email and information posted around the school as soon as the visit dates are scheduled.
