Student-Led Service Project: Welcome Baskets

  • In The Classroom

All month long, our 6th Graders have been collecting supplies to create welcome baskets for refugee children that are arriving in the St. Louis area from Afghanistan. The project was led by one of our students, who was inspired to organize this school-wide service project—we're so proud of her initiative and commitment to this cause!

Not only did many of our families generously contribute items for the 6th Graders to assemble into the welcome baskets, but Brownie Troop 2757 (which includes every girl in 2nd Grade here at New City) donated first aid kits to the project! The troop had assembled these mini first aid kits as part of earning their First Aid Badge, and had planned to donate the kits to recent refugees. Unfortunately, the group that we were planning to donate the kits to put a temporary hold on donations, and the kits were in limbo. After hearing about the welcome basket project, the troop reached out to the 6th Graders, who were happy to include the mini first aid kits in their collection.

Just a few of the welcome baskets currently lining our halls!
