1st Grade Explores Place Value

1st Grade mathematicians are exploring place value using estimation jars.

Children started by estimating how many objects were in their jar, then counted the objects while gathering groups of 10 as they went. At the end, children showed their final count as both its "true" number (ex. 34) and as tens and ones (30 and 4).

This seemingly simple activity helps students develop awareness of what higher numbers look like in the real world, while also reinforcing the habit of seeing every two digit number as a combination of tens and ones.
