Standardized Testing at New City
3rd through 6th Grade students at New City SChool participate in standardized testing through the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) each spring. New City students do quite well on this difficult test (see chart below - New City School mean in red), even with it being many of our students' first introduction to a standardized test. By beginning standardized testing in 3rd Grade, students gain an understanding of how they respond to standardized tests and know more about where they need to focus their attention before they take the SSATs in 6th Grade, a required standardized test for any student applying to independent secondary schools.
While these testing successes are affirming, they speak to only a small piece of what we at New City School value about teaching and learning. The ERBs do not yet assess creativity, collaboration, character, or the depth of critical thinking required to succeed in our complex, global society. We encourage our families to look at their child’s ERB scores as a snapshot in time of a student’s performance and are best considered in partnership with the student’s daily work and performance in the classroom.
