Diversity is one of the founding principles of New City School. Diversity Beyond the Numbers reflects both our culture and the curriculum. We believe that teaching students to understand and appreciate diversity is essential for success in life. At times, diversity is explicit and integrated into the formal curriculum; at other times, it is implicit and part of the air we breathe. We define and address diversity broadly based upon the needs of our community.
Cultural identifiers including, but not limited to, ability, age, ethnicity, gender, politics, race, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, along with the Multiple Intelligences, are integral to our curriculum. These help frame the decisions we make about what we teach and how we teach. Additionally, members of our faculty are encouraged to lean into discomfort, and faculty meetings are dedicated to discussions of diversity.
Diversity is incorporated into our instruction through theme, math, Language Arts, specialists, Responsive Classroom, Morning Meeting, advisory, plays, field trips, service projects, and teachable moments. Quite simply, it is part of who we are as a community and is therefore thoughtfully embedded into our curriculum and daily instruction.
