Meet the Staff: Laurie Falk, School Counselor

What words best describe you?
(I hope) friendly, caring, patient.

How long have you been at New City School and what did you do before coming here?
This is my 11th year at NCS. I wrote grants and ran various programs (both paid and volunteer) in several schools before coming here. Early in my career, I was also a medical social worker and worked with kidney patients and the elderly chronically ill.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I grew up in Massachusetts and also lived in Chicago, but have been in St. Louis since 1977! My husband and I raised our three sons here. They have all moved away but love to come home to visit. We have two granddaughters who live in New Orleans.

What do you like to do when you're not at New City?
Garden, ride my bike, read, watch movies, sew, quilt, and knit.

What did six-year-old Laurie want to be when she grew up?
An author.

What is your ideal vacation?
Visiting family.

What is something that most people don't know about you?
I grew up with 9 siblings (10 kids in all!) and got a lot of practice in finding ways to get along with others.

What else do you want people to know?
I believe that teaching kids about “The Personals” (intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences) is key to developing self-awareness, empathy, relationships, and community.
