Fourth Grade Hosts Ackerman School for Annual Field Day

Each year, our fourth graders host students from Ackerman School as a part of a disabilities unit within their "Citizens Making a Difference" year-long theme. Ackerman is part of the Special School District of St. Louis County, and provides special education services to students with a variety of needs.  Students gather on the New City School playground and field for arts and crafts, sing-a-longs, and other field day activities.

Ellen Birch, New City alumni parent and special education teacher at Ackerman said "This is a great way for Ackerman students to make friends, looking at abilities, not just disabilities. It's a time to be together and have fun! Our students get a chance to just be kids." Ellen said funding for the field day comes from a grant provided by the Special Education Foundation.

Ackerman parent Esther, mom to student Lucas, said "I think it's amazing. It will make these children's lives better. I wish I had had this experience growing up. It would have changed my life!"

Due to this evening's forecast, we are postponing our Winter Open House.

The event is rescheduled for next week on Wednesday, January 17th. The Open House will still start at 6:00 pm, and the schedule will remain the same; you do not need to send us a second RSVP. Thank you for your flexibility, and we hope to see you there!
