    Matt Kaskowitz

    Class of 1989

I attended New City from 4/5's through 6th grade. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the experiences I had there. Those years were formative times for me; and I found them to be very exciting. All of my classmates were especially inquisitive; -and just being in that positive environment has always reminded me of the high schools in both "Grease", and "The Manhattan Project". I had teachers in 4th and 6th grade that made quite a positive and big impact on me. In 5th and 6th grade I went to a mud cave, on a camping trip, and also to Chicago! I really enjoyed the pottery class; I got to see physical manifestations of the personalities of all of my classmates. I currently work as an Assistant Scoutmaster in the BSA, a Freelance Union Actor, and a Media Editor. Even today, NCS inspires me to create works about them!

After graduating from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School with a B.S. in Economics and concentrations in Marketing and Legal Studies in May of 2012, Bahja moved to San Francisco, CA in the fall to start her career with Gap Inc. She was part of their Retail Management Program, a nine-month training program based in their San Francisco headquarters, where trainees get the opportunity to rotate through three of the company's six brands while working in the three main product-facing functions: Inventory Management, Merchandising, and Production. Upon graduation of the program, trainees are provided permanent placement in one of the three functions. After rotating with teams at Old Navy Online, Banana Republic, Gap Brand, and even spending her last three months living and training in the New York office, she graduated from the program in June of 2013 and is now the Assistant Merchandiser for Women's Knits at Gap Brand North America. In her new role, she works with their merchants from around the world to create a compelling assortment for their customers, and even gets to travel to visit their store's teams and talk about the fun new product they have coming in future seasons! She has had a very exciting year, and is so grateful for the opportunities that Gap Inc. has given her! She also loves living in the Bay Area, and has such a great time exploring what California has to offer!

She wants to share that, "At New City School, the teachers make learning fun. Not only did this fantastic institution foster a love of learning that I cherish to this day, but the teachers and faculty at New City infused me with a confidence and a drive that made me feel like I was capable of absolutely anything. They encouraged us to be brave, ask questions, and tap into our multiple intelligences. They empowered us to not just be seats in a classroom, but to be citizens of the world. The lessons I learned at New City School far exceed that of a traditional elementary school education, for I know I would not be half the woman I am today without the amazing individuals whom instilled in me the core values of Academics, Ambiance, and Diversity."
