Have you ever found yourself asking, "What is a GOOD book to read?" or, "What book CAN I read?" You now have the answer to those questions -- New City School's Too Good to Miss booklist.
This list includes all the books that we think are just too wonderful to not read. We’ve included books we feel will give you a variety of authors, genres and subjects, as well as books that just fit well with a particular age or grade.
You may have already read several of these books - good for you! But others will be new to you, so we are encouraging you to find those books and read them.
We also want to help you find books that are at your level. Often students want to read books that are way above their independent level, or books that are way too easy. An easy-read or a challenging read can be good sometimes, but we want you to find that "just-right" level. That’s why we’ve given you so many suggestions. Remember the five-finger rule - select a passage and hold up a finger each time you come to a word you don’t know. If you hold up your entire hand, that tells you the book is probably too difficult. So, pick another choice.
We have not, of course, listed all the great books that are available; that list would be too long to print. At most grades, we have listed only one selection by a particular author. Our hope is that once you fall in love with one book by a certain author, you’ll want to find others by him or her.
One final note on the list of Picture Books. Our feelings are that you are simply never too old for a good picture book. Even if you are a fifth or sixth grader don’t pass up the opportunity to check out some of these titles. Many have won the coveted Caldecott Award, and some will just take you back to an earlier time in your life. That can be a fun adventure.
So, enjoy the books on this list. Check off the ones you have read - find the ones you haven’t. Have fun and read, read, read!
