WHY NEW CITY SCHOOL?
Exceptional Academic Preparation
New City School’s comprehensive curriculum provides students with a strong academic foundation. New City School students consistently score three to four years above grade level on standardized national tests, and NCS graduates are sought after by top secondary schools, colleges and universities. See the "Graduates" section for more information about the secondary schools and colleges that our alumni attend.
Intentional Focus on Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is learned and reinforced at New City School through an emphasis on the personal intelligences. Intrapersonal intelligence –the ability to know oneself, and interpersonal intelligence – the ability to work well with others, are a constant focus – both in the classroom and in assessment. The first page of the New City School progress report that provides feedback in these areas has been adapted for use in evaluating law students at Washington University and for use in personnel evaluation at a local Fortune 500 company.
Preparation for Success in a Diverse World
New City School students honor differences – in talents and abilities, cultures, socio-economic circumstances, race, ethnicity and points of view. Because they have personal experiences in our diverse community,New City School graduates are comfortable exploring and learning from and about differences. This is an essential skill in an increasingly multi-cultural and diverse world.
Beyond Academics
At New City School, academic preparation is only the first step. Our unique learning community – in which children, teachers, parents and school leaders are engaged together in joyful learning – creates a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. By deliberately integrating opportunities for individual expression, teamwork, self-reflection, and giving and receiving feedback, the New City School education prepares children to be successful – both in and out of the classroom.
"
Bantu tribesmen, it is said, sneak into the rooms of their children as they sleep and whisper in their ears, 'Become what you are.' At New City School, not only are my child's academic needs being met, but each day as I drop her off, I know she is safe and encouraged to become what she is. That is everything."
