New City School

June 4, 2010

Dear Friends, Families, Educators, Neighbors, and Everyone Else,

This is it! TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! Thank you for your smiles and your care and your children.
How about that SCHOOL PICNIC? Thanks to Terry, Candace, and Anthony of the P.O., and the scores and scores of volunteers who helped with the picnic on Wednesday afternoon. In a word, it was BOFFO! There must have been nearly 1,000 people here. We ran out of food (went through 65 gallons of lemonade plus all the bottled water) but not out of fun. It was a great way to end the year!
space Vote for our Red Doors!
From Betsy: Many of you may remember a poster created a number of years ago that showcased  the doors of the CWE. They are making a new version and we have a chance to get the New City red doors included! The red doors will be one of 40 doors photographed and on display at the Taste Of the CWE the weekend of June 11, held on/around Euclid in the Central West End. The 25 doors receiving the most votes will be included on the new poster.

So, please stop by the fair and vote for New City's red doors
.
In fact, stop by several times, ask your friends and neighbors to vote, have your kids vote, your cousins, your dog, the person next to you in line. I mean, how can there be a poster of the doors of the CWE and the red doors not be included?! (The voting place is on Euclid in front of the shop Relish. It is south of Lindell by the Einstein's Cafe.)

This is a picture of our newest graduates, the class of 2010
. The sixth grade year culminates with a three-night overnight to Chicago, and here they are before hopping on the bus.

space Learning the Systems of the Body
The kindergarten's year-long theme, "Busy Bodies," culminates with students building a life-size, functioning human body. Yep, it works! This photo shows a student posed with her body; the intestines are visible.

It's a great way to use MI to learn. Students use their spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, and logical-mathematical intelligences to learn about their bodies. Oh yeah, it's fun too.

Students also shared their Body Books which contained all of the activities on which they worked while learning about each system of the body. Last week we held a Busy Body Breakfast with calories galore. Students also presented their bodies to their parents, explaining how the various systems function and interact.
space A great graduation it was!
Here's a photo of our 38 graduates, spruced up and ready to face the world!  The graduation ceremony was priceless, recognizing each child's achievements and potential.

We were joined by two alum speakers from the New City class of 2004: Lauren Fields, new graduate of Crossroads College Prep, and Cameron Smith, new graduate of John Burroughs.

space The Postcards Were A Big Hit!
From Shannah: Our first NCS Picnic art sale was such a success we sold out of our student art post cards! The money raised from the sale of over 400 art cards will go to help offset the cost of printing, but most importantly this sale helped our young photographers see that their art is valued and appreciated. Thank you to everyone who came by to support the fifth grade artists!
space Here's more on those alum speakers.
Lauren Fields has been a student ambassador at Crossroads College Prep. She was a George Washington Carver Award recipient (GPA of 4.0 or higher), and winner of the Arts in Transit and River Styx poetry contexts. She is a recipient of the Harvard Book Award, a National Achievement Scholar, and will be attending Harvard University in the fall.

Cameron Smith was a captain of the John Burroughs high school football team, and was honored by the NFL Foundation as one of eleven scholar athletes for the St. Louis area. He participated in the Global Youth Leadership Institute, and was a member of the yearbook staff. He will be attending the Honors College at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead-Cain Scholar.

space Spatial Intelligence
From Joe: Last week we concluded our Chess Tournament and all the grade level winners received t-shirts. We had a contest of all the designs submitted, giving our Spatially adventurous students a chance to show their stuff. After the votes were counted the winner of that competition was Claire Hoffman, shown wearing her winning design. Claire deserves a special mention because this is the second time one of her t-shirt designs has won this year! Congratulations to Claire and thanks to all those who entered designs; they were all great.
space The Parent Bookshelf
From Jessica, our MI Library Coordinator: We are so pleased that so many of you have used our parenting bookshelf resources! If you have finished the book/books you have borrowed, please return them to the bookshelf. Place the checkout card back inside the front cover of the book. If you are interested in borrowing a book/books for the summer, feel free! Happy Reading!
space First Grade Chess
From Joe: Here's a final note on the Chess Tournament this year. The first grade recently completed their tournament and the winners were Reilly Dillon and Ashlyn Runge. Grade 2-6 grade-level tournament winners play Tom, and I get the winners of grade 1. Both Ashlyn and Reilly played very well against me. (Top row left to right: Adam Blumoff, Kylie Goldfarb, Abby Maschmann, Oliver Zimmerman. Bottom row left to right: Ashlyn Runge, Reilly Dillon.)
space Is it lost or is it found?
From Mary: The Lost and Found will be in the main hall on Friday and Monday for parents to reclaim any lost items from their children. After Monday, everything will be given to charity.
space Helping Others
Challenger Baseball of St. Louis is a non-profit organization that operates a league designed especially youngsters with developmental and physical disabilities. Challenger teams are supported by a buddy system in which young able-bodied volunteers assist Challenger players during their games. Several of our kids stepped forward to play this role. Here's one of our students, Peter, a sixth grader, with a buddy he helped.
