This annual event is sponsored by the Evening Diversity Committee. We will enjoy a “Taste of the Hill” buffet dinner (at a cost of $10 per adult, to be billed to tuition) as we join together for conversation at tables of interest. What a great way to spend a Friday night! Topics to choose from are: 1. By putting her foot in her mouth, Dr. Laura opened up the topic of divisive language in society. She claims First Amendment privilege. Are there words you can or can’t say? Are there words only some people can say? What, if anything, constitutes hate speech? 2. We get frustrated when a good policy doesn't get passed due to Congressional politics. But, can politics and policy really be separated? Should they be? 3. Does it really take “all kinds"? What is the meaning of tolerance? Is “tolerance” enough? 4. Lookism in our lives: What role do looks play in educational and professional advancement? Why and how do looks matter? Is there a double standard for different groups of people? 5. Immigration: Do new Americans “owe” the U.S. anything? Do we, as a nation, “owe” them anything? Does the answer change based upon their legal status- documented or undocumented? 6. What role does or should religion play in politics? Is it realistic to expect people to separate their religious and political beliefs? If so, what would that look like? 7. How do you define socio-economic classes? What is a want? A need? Are they the same regardless of class? Has the current economic climate changed your view of wants and needs? 8. What is the tipping point for activism? What does it take to mobilize people for/against something? What does activism look like in our digital society? 9. What is the effect of the 24/7 news cycle? Do you feel more informed or more overwhelmed with so much information readily available? 10. Sex Ed: Abstinence-Only vs. Comprehensive Education? What do you teach in your home? How do we equate that to education in the schools?
